Piercing prices at Axel Steel vary by placement and jewelry. Piercings start at $65. Facial and body piercings run a bit higher based on complexity. The price always includes a piece of starter jewelry chosen for safe healing. We use implant-grade titanium and implant-grade steel as our standard, not as an upsell. Do you charge more for complex piercings?

Accepted Answer

Yes, some placements take more time and technique. Industrial piercings, daith placements, and genital piercings, for example, involve more anatomy assessment and precision work than a standard lobe. The price reflects what the piercing actually requires, not a flat fee regardless of complexity. We'll always tell you the cost before we do anything.

How long does the actual piercing take?

Accepted Answer

The piercing itself only takes a few seconds. The prep, positioning, and aftercare rundown is what takes a little longer, usually 15–20 minutes total for your appointment. We take our time to make sure placement is exactly right before we do anything. You won't feel rushed, and you'll leave knowing exactly how to care for your new piercing.

How long does a piercing take to fully heal?

Healing time really depends on the location. Earlobes can heal in as little as 6–8 weeks, while cartilage, nose, and body piercings can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months for complete healing. We give you a specific healing estimate and a full aftercare sheet for your exact piercing before you leave. Following the aftercare instructions closely is the single biggest factor in a smooth, problem-free heal.

Is there anything I need to do to prepare before my appointment?

Yes, eat a good meal a few hours before.It gives easy access to the area being pierced with stable blood sugar. Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before coming in, since it thins your blood and can make things messier than they need to be. Wear comfortable clothing that gives access to the area you're getting pierced. And bring a valid, government-issued photo ID. Texas law requires it.

Do I need to make an appointment, or do you take walk-ins?

We take both. You can book online through our Square booking link or just walk in during our open hours. If you want a specific time locked in, booking ahead is the way to go,  especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when we're busiest.

What metal do you use for initial piercings?

Accepted Answer

We use implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136) and implant-grade steel as our standard starting jewelry. These are biocompatible metals your body actually accepts. They're lighter, produce fewer reactions, and heal faster than mystery metals or low-grade steel. If your last piercing stayed angry for months, the jewelry was probably the problem.

What's the difference between implant-grade titanium and surgical steel?

Accepted Answer

Both are safe for initial piercings when they're actually implant-grade (not just marketed that way). Titanium is lighter, completely nickel-free, and the best choice for anyone with metal sensitivity. Implant-grade surgical steel is heavier but still biocompatible and widely used. Neither contains the nickel alloys that cause the reactions people blame on "piercing sensitivity." The grade of the metal matters more than the type

Can I bring my own jewelry to be pierced with?

We don't pierce with outside jewelry. The reason is simple: we can't verify the metal grade, the sizing, or whether the piece is appropriate for initial healing in your specific anatomy. Using the wrong jewelry, even one that looks fine, is the most common reason piercings reject or get infected. We have a solid selection of starting pieces that work, and we'll help you pick what's right.

When can I change my jewelry?

Accepted Answer

Not until the piercing is fully healed, and healing takes longer than most people expect. A piercing that looks and feels fine at 6 weeks is often still healing internally. Cartilage and body piercings can take up to a year. Changing jewelry too early is one of the most common ways people restart the whole healing process from scratch. When you're ready to swap, come in and let us do it, we'll make sure the new piece is the right fit.

How do I clean a new piercing?

Accepted Answer

Use a sterile saline wound wash, the kind in a can, like NeilMed Wound Wash. Spray it directly on the piercing once or twice a day. Don't use hydrogen peroxide, rubbing alcohol, or antibacterial soap. Don't twist or rotate the jewelry. That's old advice that causes more irritation than it prevents. Leave it alone except for cleaning,

Can I swim or go to the lake while my piercing is healing?

Accepted Answer

Wait 2 weeks. Pools, lakes, rivers, hot tubs, and even bath water introduce bacteria that can derail healing fast. Austin summers are brutal for this. People get pierced in May, spend the summer in Barton Springs or Lake Travis, and wonder why they're still healing in October. We give you aftercare that accounts for Austin's climate, but avoiding submersion is non-negotiable while you're healing.

Why did my piercing reject?

Accepted Answer

Rejection happens when your body treats the jewelry like a foreign object and gradually pushes it out through the skin. The most common causes are jewelry that's the wrong gauge or material, too-shallow placement, or trauma to the area. A piercer who rushes, uses cheap hardware, or doesn't assess your anatomy before placing a surface piercing is the biggest risk factor. If you've had piercings rejected before, tell us before your appointment. There are placements and materials that work better for bodies prone to rejection

Do you use piercing guns or needles?

Accepted Answer

Needles only. A piercing gun forces a blunt stud through your skin with pressure. It tears tissue rather than cutting it cleanly. The Association of Professional Piercers advises against piercing guns, and for good reason. They can't be properly sterilized, they cause more tissue damage, and that damage means longer healing times and more complications. Every piercing at Axel Steel is done with a single-use, pre-packaged, sterile needle. Opened in front of you. Used once. Disposed of properly.

How do you sterilize your equipment?

Accepted Answer

Single-use needles come pre-sterilized in sealed packages and are opened in front of you. Reusable equipment goes through an autoclave, a medical-grade sterilization unit that uses heat and pressure to kill pathogens. We follow bloodborne pathogen protocols for every client. The setup area is disinfected between appointments. If a studio can't tell you exactly what their sterilization process is, that's your cue to walk out.

Texas requires piercing artists to register with the state health department and operate in a licensed facility. Axel Steel Piercing operates inside Aztlan Ink Tattoo, a fully licensed body art studio at 5200 E William Cannon Dr., Suite 102E, Austin, TX 78744. If you want to verify credentials, ask when you come in, we don't mind the question.

Do I need an ID to get a piercing in Austin?

Yes. Texas law requires a valid, government-issued photo ID for body piercing. A driver's license, state ID, or passport works. Digital copies of IDs on your phone are not legally acceptable substitutes for adults in Texas, you need the physical document. If you're a minor, a parent or legal guardian must be present and provide their own ID along with yours

Yes, with parental consent. A parent or legal guardian must be present in the studio for the entire appointment and provide their government-issued photo ID along with the minor's documentation. The minor also needs a current photo ID, a school ID, passport, or similar documentation works. We review this before any appointment with a minor.

Can I get a piercing if I have a medical condition?

Accepted Answer

Certain conditions require extra consideration, diabetes, bleeding disorders, autoimmune conditions, or a history of keloid scarring, for example. Be upfront about your medical history. Brian will discuss whether your planned piercing is a good fit, suggest adjustments to placement or aftercare, or recommend you check with your doctor first if needed. We're not going to wave you through if there's a real risk.

Can I get pierced if I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?

We don't pierce during pregnancy. Infection risk increases, healing is unpredictable, and it's not worth the complications for you or your baby. If you're breastfeeding and want to get your nipples pierced, wait until you've finished. Nipple piercings can interfere with milk supply and feeding, and the healing timeline is long enough that it's just not the right time.

Do you fix bad piercings from other studios?

Yes. We see this regularly. Someone walks in with a six-month-old piercing that's still inflamed, and nine times out of ten the problem is bad jewelry, wrong metal, too-short post, butterfly backs trapping moisture. We assess what's happening, clean it up, and swap in jewelry that actually works for healing. We can also remove and re-pierce placements that healed crooked or in the wrong position. Come in and we'll take a look.

Do you do jewelry changes for healed piercings?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If your piercing is fully healed and you want to swap in something new, we can do the change for you. This is especially useful for smaller placements, like nostril studs, where getting the jewelry in and out without irritating the channel is harder than it looks.
